What is a Porcelain Inlay?
A porcelain or composite inlay is a custom made filling, which can be made of various materials. One of the most common is porcelain, which is colored to match your tooth to appear aesthetically pleasing. Porcelain inlays are stain resistant and hard, making them an advantageous choice. A composite inlay is made of tooth-colored composites, similar to porcelain.
Inlays are applied by dentists to repair teeth that have been damaged by decay or trauma, or those that have defective fillings. Inlays are ideal in comparison to conventional silver fillings, as they appear more natural while maintaining the tooth’s strength. Inlays are also usually preferable to crowns because less tooth structure is removed during preparation.
Porcelain and composite inlays are highly durable and last several years. However, like most dental restoration procedures, they are not always permanent and may someday need replacement.
Why Do I Need an Inlay?
There are various reasons why your dentist may recommend a porcelain or composite inlay. If your teeth have been broken or fractured, this is an optimal solution. Dentists also typically suggest this procedure for those with fractured fillings or large fillings. One of the biggest advantages to an inlay is the natural look it will give, enhancing your already beautiful smile.
What Does Getting a Porcelain Inlay Involve?
For a porcelain inlay procedure, it will usually require two appointments. The first appointment will consist of making highly accurate molds of your tooth, which will be used to create a custom inlay. You will also get a temporary restoration.
While your tooth is numb, the dentist will remove any old filling material or decay. The space in your tooth will be cleaned and prepared for the inlay restoration. In the meantime, you will have a temporary filling as a dental laboratory prepares the porcelain or composite inlay. It is imperative that you are cautious with this temporary filling, as it will not be as secure as the inlay will be.
At your second appointment, the new inlay will be cemented into place. The dentist may need to make a few adjustments to ensure an exact fit and that your bite is comfortable. After the procedure, you will receive care instruction from your dentist.
